Why study a pathway program?

Choosing the right study option can lead to some sleepless nights, but it doesn’t have to be that complicated. Once you have established your goals and objectives, it is easier to select a path that fits your unique requirements. Sometimes it seems that there is only one way to get a title, but this is simply not true. Pathway programs provide the ideal foundation and momentum for your academic journey. We guide you on what they are about and what you can expect if you decide to take the plunge down that path.

University pathway programs give you access to world-class institutions while improving your skills and qualifications. Pathway programs often have much more flexible entry requirements than university degrees, helping you develop the essential academic skills you’ll need for your journey to higher education.

What is a pathway program?

A pathway program is a course designed for students to catch up with the academic requirements of an undergraduate or graduate degree. The focus is on the key skills, knowledge, and competencies that relate to the subject area to be completed at grade level.

Pathway programs help students who do not meet the entrance or admission requirements for direct entry to college, but who have the potential to do so. The programs also aim to develop the English language skills that are critical to success in higher education. Successful completion of a pathway program leads to enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree at most universities.

Some pathway programs, called core programs, have slightly lower entry requirements. Foundation programs teach vital academic skills and ultimately allow students to begin a degree for which they were previously ineligible. In other cases, students can complete a first-year equivalent program, allowing them to enter directly into the second year of their desired degree.

What is a Pathway Provider?

Pathway providers partner with universities to offer courses and programs for students preparing for graduate study, including English language programs and vocational training. They are professional education providers with specialist knowledge and experience in higher education. They also have a global network of institutions and industry contacts which greatly benefits students. Pathway providers are often based on university campuses, meaning international students can enjoy the full student experience while earning credits towards their degree.

A well-known provider of the pathway, for example, is Navitas, an organization that has worked on international student pathways for over 25 years. Today, Navitas offers pathways to degrees at 32 partner universities around the world, in the UK, Germany, North America, Australasia and more. Some of the institutions you can study at with Navitas include London Brunel International College , La Trobe College Australia , and Ryerson International College , to name just a few.

What grade do you get after completing a pathway program?

Pathway programs are designed to prepare students for college while earning credit toward degree entry. While some pathway universities offer independent qualifications such as certificates or diplomas, above all, pathway programs are designed to help students achieve their goals of entering a university degree.

Many universities design and select their pathway program curriculum specifically for international students. If you achieve the required academic level in a pathway program, automatic admission to your chosen university degree is a very real possibility. Remember, always check what the bachelor’s entry requirements are and whether your future university guarantees admission by completing the corresponding pathway program.

What types of subjects can you study with a pathway programme?

Because pathway programs are designed to progress to undergraduate or postgraduate study, the subjects you study will match the degree you hope to earn. You’ll be able to improve your academic and subject-specific skills before starting your degree, in subjects including:

Business

computer’s science

Engineering

humanities

life sciences

social Sciences

Ley

Economic Sciences

Design

environmental science

Many pathway programs also include a study module in English. You’ll have the opportunity to learn the key language skills needed to study abroad, from academic writing to seminar participation. It also means that if you complete the course, you will meet the formal English language entry requirements, such as IELTS.

Some of the other skills you will develop in your pathway program include:

Communication

collaboration

Organization

Critical thinking

Analysis capacity

Projects management

What are the admission requirements for a pathway program?

Entry requirements for a pathway program will vary depending on the field chosen and the country of study. However, there are some general rules to consider.

The first is that subject-specific pathway programs or first-year equivalent placement programs may have higher English language requirements than a general core studies course. This is particularly the case in law, social sciences, humanities and business.

For a General Foundation Studies programme, you will need an IELTS score of 5.5, with no band below 5.5. This is equivalent to a GCSE English level C grade, an International Baccalaureate level 4 standard or a TOEFL score of 46 to 59.

For subject-specific programs or first-year equivalents, or in disciplines such as law or social sciences, your IELTS score will need to be at least 6.0 with no band lower than 5.5. This is equivalent to an International Baccalaureate standard level 5 or a TOEFL score of 60 to 78.The academic entry requirements for a pathway program will depend on the subject you intend to pursue. For example, if you want to study for degrees in engineering, business, accounting, or science, you’ll find that previous study in math or physics is crucial. As an international student, you must also have an International Baccalaureate degree or equivalent.

How long do Pathway programs take?

The time it takes you to complete a special program depends on several factors. These include what subjects you are studying, secondly, the university where you are studying and, finally, the structure of your study plan. On average, programs take six months to a year to complete.

Completion of the program is dependent on you meeting all key deadlines and achieving required results. This means attending lectures and lab sessions, as well as developing a study schedule for homework and self-directed learning. You will need to complete several assessments during your course to earn the credits needed to progress. You may also be required to take a final exam that tests your general knowledge.

What to do after a pathway program?

The goals of a pathway program are to lead you to your dream degree, hone your key skills in your chosen field, and open up career opportunities. This experience is a must to lay the foundation for your higher education journey and set you up for success.

Once you’ve completed your pathway program, you could also use your new skills to get an internship or job while you study for your degree. Never underestimate the value of real world experience.
